SANKOFA ARTIST COMPETITION – Juror’s Statement 

Congratulations regarding this successful exhibition. Sankofa “Looking Back At 2020” gives your gallery a fresh new perspective by inviting artists to respond to the current issues of our time. You and the participating artists have provided, for us, hidden emotions, images and expressions that may not have a public platform otherwise. Even though this exhibition asked artists to respond to one theme, I am impressed with the variety of artistic approaches, subjects, media and compositions. While I perceived the theme ,Sankofa, in my own way, artists in this exhibition presented different variations through pictorial representations, both abstract and real. Therefore, as an artist, it’s given me an opportunity to look at the theme with a fresh set of eyes and from different perspectives.

In review of the submissions, I must admit, I was slow, methodical, and deliberate while enjoying each artwork. I looked at each artwork several times before making my final selections. I also read each artists’ statement about their submissions. There is nothing better than spending time viewing artworks you can respect, appreciate, and admire. Thanks to the Triangle Cultural Art Gallery for allowing me to jury this exhibition right down to the very last details.
